Tracing the Space – Bożenna Biskupska
During the 22nd Warsaw Art Fair, you will have the opportunity to see a comprehensive exhibition of Bożenna Biskupska’s work. After more than 20 years, the artist’s monumental work ‘Wytyczanie obraz w przestrzeni’ (Marking Out an Image in Space) from 1999 will be presented, which was last shown to the public at an exhibition at the Warsaw branch of the National Museum Królikarnia and at the Centre of Polish Sculpture in Orońsko. The exhibition will feature the artist’s works created since the 1980s, as well as her latest series of sculptures, ‘The Second Identity of Sculpture,’ and bronze casts of plates from the 343 system. The exhibition will be complemented by large-format paintings from the ‘Line’ series, created with linseed oil.

Bożenna Biskupska delineates space with a line, dividing it in order to multiply and connect it. With a seemingly simple artistic gesture, she draws a timeline, tracking its passage by observing the gilding of the originally invisible linseed oil. She waits for time to pass and the image to mature, and then it independently determines the space it wants to take over. Sometimes, space and matter are locked in a cage of time and examined as if under a microscope, only to be finally released by a sharp diagonal cut. The artist tracks space. She marks it, leaving a trace of her intervention.
